threshold

I am in a yellow desert or a dense green forest, a field of golden wheat or a blinding white glacier, or an vast soft ocean.  A surface extends before me, no point or line on it appears more valuable than any other, at least not by any criteria other than my own desires.  There are no paths or points.  The points and paths are innumerable.  I might as well just take the first step and begin to make a way [14].
